Title: Genus bounds for normal surfaces
I will start with a brief overview of decision problems about
3-manifolds, and Haken’s blueprint for addressing them using normal
surface theory. Prototypes are unknot recognition and 3-sphere
After this, I will describe a sharp bound on the genus of a normal
surface in a triangulated compact, orientable 3-manifold in terms of
the quadrilaterals in its cell decomposition, and if time permits
describe two applications of this bound. This is joint work with
William Jaco, Jesse Johnson and Jonathan Spreer.
